The Santa Rosa Junior College men’s and women’s tennis teams finished their preseason on the road at Cosumnes River College Tuesday. The women won their match 6-1 to finish the preseason 4-0, while the men were forced to forfeit three matches due to a lack of players and lost 3-6.

Both teams started well, winning all four doubles matches. Second-year players Trevor Pinder and Shannon Connell rallied after being down the entire match to win 9-7. The women continued their run of doubles dominance, winning both matches 8-3. Second-year player Thu Dang played her first doubles match of the season, teaming up with second-year Julia O’Keefe.

The singles matches were also a strong point for the women: they won four of five matches, with the only loss by forfeit. The Bear Cub women have dominated singles this preseason, winning 16 of 18 possible matches.

The men’s team struggled in singles all day and lost five of six matches, although two of those were by default. One bright spot was second-year Andres Jojoa-Ortega, who won his match in sets of  6-3 and 7-5.

Head coach Connor Van Alstyne said he looks forward to the their regular season opener. “We will work really hard on our fitness and mental toughness these next few days as we prepare for two loaded teams in Folsom Lake,” Van Alstyne said.

The Bear Cubs’ first conference match of the season is at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Izzy Derkos courts against Folsom Lake College.
