Review

Amy’s Drive-Thru is working towards returning to the roots of American fast food, serving handcrafted food to all, but not everything on their vegan and vegetarian-friendly menu is a hit.

For $50, you can order what equals to about one menu item per menu category. Selections include Amy’s classic veggie burger, also known as “The Amy,” an original cheese pizza, the classic burrito with medium salsa, traditional mac n cheese, chili cheese fries, cinnamon roll, waffle, lemonade and an organic chocolate milkshake.

The veggie burger is a staff recommended as the best thing on the menu, and it is. “The Amy” is served on a bun that doesn’t overwhelm the meatless patties. Partnered with cheese and Amy’s special spicy sauce, the Amy is a perfect veggie burger that some could argue tastes better than a regular burger. The spicy sauce can be ordered as a side to use as a dipping sauce for fries, which is perfect because of its barbeque sauce flavor with only a slight kick.

Amy’s cinnamon roll and chili fries are also amazing. The cinnamon roll comes warm and gooey. The chili on the fries isn’t too spicy and the beans don’t overwhelm the chili, making it a well-balanced side dish.

The rest of the menu items, however, fell short. The burrito and pizza taste no better than the frozen version you can buy in grocery stores. The mac ‘n’ cheese isn’t creamy and tasted as though it’s made with water and powdered cheese. A microwavable dish made at home would’ve saved some money and time. The waffle is also flavorless and tastes more savory than sweet, despite being served with maple syrup.

All of the sodas are made with organic cane sugar however they’re not fully organic, including the lemonade, which is sour yet refreshing. The organic shakes are thick and flavorful. The chocolate shake is rich and tastes as though it’s made with real dark chocolate.

Amy’s has a few staple items that are consistently good, but once you get into the less frequently ordered menu items, the food starts to taste more like microwavable dinners.

The entire menu is cost-effective, with every menu item is under $9 and most menu items in the $5 to $6 range.

Amy’s drive-through is a great local spot with super veggie burgers, a great staff and a local presence. The line for the drive-thru may be long, which is why curbside pickup and delivery through UberEats and Grubhub are also available.
