Women’s basketball vs. Modesto Juinor College, 1/31

The Santa Rosa Junior College women’s basketball team (16-7, 8-0) dominated the first half and eased their way to a 65-44 victory against Modesto Junior College (6-13, 0-8) Jan. 31 at Haehl Pavillion.

The Bear Cubs opened up the game with a 14-0 run before MJC finally got on the board with 10:55 to go in the half to make it 14-2.

The Bear Cubs lead quickly grew to 22-2 with 8:14 in the first half.

MJC scored the next six points to make it 22-8 with 3:39 left in the half.

SRJC made three free throws and a layup before MJC made a free throw to end the half 27-10.

MJC scored six points in the first two minutes of the second half to make SRJC’s lead just 11 points.

SRJC quickly increased their lead back to 15 with 17:40 left in the game.

With the score 34-22 and 16:30 remaining, SRJC went on a 12-0 run to extend the lead to 24 with 13:27 left in the game.

MJC could only climb back to within 17 points of the SRJC with 10:22 to play.

The Bear Cubs led by as many as 25 points late in the game before finishing with a 65-44 advantage.

The Bear Cubs were led by sophomore guard Madison Sowards 19 points (7-12).

Bear Cubs leading scorer sophomore guard Gretchen Harrigan added 11 points (4-9).

This was the Bear Cubs eighth win in a row and have a two game lead over San Joaquin Delta and Sierra College for first place in the Big 8.

The Bear Cubs shot 45.2% (25-53) compared to MJC’s 33.3% (20-60)

SRJC held MJC to just one made three-pointer on 10 shots.

SRJC outrebounded MJC 36-26.
