Film series back for another round

The Petaluma Cinema Series is back with an award-winning line-up of films this semester, kicking off Wednesday nights on Feb. 1 in the Carole L. Ellis Auditorium at Santa Rosa Junior College’s Petaluma Campus.

The 2012 Petaluma Spring Cinema Series will offer a weekly showing of films, including new releases, classic movies and foreign films. Before each screening is a pre-film lecture at 6 p.m., followed by the film of the week at 7 p.m. and a discussion after the film until 10 p.m.

This spring’s films will be shown in the following order starting Feb. 1: “Inception,” “Casablanca,” “The Last King of Scotland,” “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Blade Runner,” “Miss Representation,” “The Piano,” “Where Soldiers Come From,” “Roman Holiday,” “Trainspotting,” “Sweeney Todd,” “The Tin Drum,” “Me and You and Everyone We Know,” “The Story of the Weeping Camel” and ends with “King Kong” (1933) on May 16.

SRJC Film and Media Instructor Michael Traina started the Cinema Series nearly three years ago and has seen a steady growth in attendance each year. Traina said last year’s most popular film was “Black Swan” and to his surprise the closer of the series last year, “The Wizard of Oz,” had a large turn out.

This year Traina expects the March 28 film, “Where Soldiers Come From,” to be a spectacular night. The film has won many awards and Traina hopes to have the director, Heather Courtney, fly in from Austin, Texes. to participate in the screening and discussion. According to the “Where Soldiers Came From” website, the movie “follows the four-year journey of childhood friends, forever changed by a faraway war.”

All screenings are open to the public so everyone is encouraged to bring a friend or the entire family. General admission is $5 per screening or $40 for a series pass. Students get $1 off general admission and students with an ASP membership get in for free.

The Box Office is open from 5:30-7:15 p.m. on Wednesday nights.

There will be no screening the week of Spring Break on Wednesday March 21, 2012. The shows start in February and end May 16.
