Bear Cubs obliterate Panthers ahead of regular season finale

The Santa Rosa Junior College men’s basketball [17-10, 7-6] thoroughly tore apart Sacramento City College en route to an 86-59 win Feb. 16 at Haehl Pavilion.

Four Bear Cubs hit double-digit scoring while the entire team shot 50 percent for the game. Sophomore guard Siaan Rojas led the way with 18 points, 7 rebound and 3 assists while playing lock-down defense.

“We’re close out there [as a team] and we were clicking today,” Rojas said.

Rojas had a right shoulder injury scare late in the first half, but he played through it for the rest of the game.

After being up 32-19, Sacramento City cut the lead to 10 by the half. But that was the closest they came as SRJC took a 59-36 lead while it took SCC over five minutes to make their first shot in the second half. Santa Rosa’s biggest lead was 29 in the second half.

Despite the onslaught, the fans weren’t always cheering. Boos echoed through the pavilion with some questionable calls from the referees. The technical foul from Jordan Hickman’s slam-dunk towards the end of the game was the tipping point for the home crowd.

Sophomore Brandon Rowden led SCC with strong post work and free-throw shooting for a total of 17 points, but he was the only one consistently scoring.

Kiel Long played for the first time in front of the home crowd. He had been out since Jan. 19 due to injury. His return came at a good time with playoffs around the corner.

Santa Rosa ranks third in their conference and hopes to keep their winning streak alive in their season finale against Sierra College at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at Haehl Pavilion.
