The loudest sounds on Santa Rosa Junior College’s Sypher Field were the cheers from SRJC’s bench when the Bear Cubs women’s soccer faced off against Cosumnes River College Sept. 24.

The ball remained on the Bear Cubs’ scoring side for the majority of the first half, yet no goals were scored.

“We dominated the first half with possession and scoring opportunities. We just didn’t finish our chances,” said head coach Tracy Hamm.

The tension increased in the second half when Cosumnes River became more aggressive and more energetic. Cosumnes River scored the only goal of the game, resulting in a 0-1 loss for the Bear Cubs.

“That was a good opportunity to see what another top team was like,” Hamm said.

After a couple of days’ rest, the Bear Cubs came back with a 5-0 win against Sacramento City College on Sept. 27.

“We played with really high pressure and high energy,” Hamm said.

Forward Kayleen Belda, assisted by forwards Ashley Smith and Angelica Moralez, scored two out of the five goals. Christina Rebata, assisted by defender Jill Anderson and forward Gabi Delagnes, scored two goals as well. Midfielder Taylor Halstenson, assisted by Belda, scored a goal as well.

The Bear Cubs played their next game against Sierra College Oct. 1.

Just a few minutes after the game started, Sierra booted the ball past SRJC goalie Ayelet Haar, leaving the Bear Cubs behind by one point. However, forward Christina Rebata scored for the Bear Cubs before the end of the half to tie up the game.

During the second half of the game, the referee paused the game after midfielder Taylor Halstenson twisted her ankle receiving a pass. The pain forced her to come off the field for the remainder of the game.

“I’m hoping to be able to play on Friday,” Halstenson said after the game.

Haar made eighteen saves throughout the entire game.

Sierra lead 9-7 in fouls.

Coach Hamm hopes for the team to score more goals in future games in order to earn more wins.

“We’re not being disciplined in the game plan,” she said while discussing what the team needs to do to break ties.

The Bear Cubs then faced Modesto College on Oct. 4, where they won 3-0.

Midfielder Courtney Rebata scored two of the goals. Defender Jill Anderson assisted her in making both those goals. Forward Angelica Moralez scored the third goal.

The next home game takes place against American River College Oct. 11 at 3:30 p.m.
