SRJC Student Dies in Work Accident

A Santa Rosa Junior College student died in an industrial accident April 19 at Thermalsun Glass Products in Santa Rosa.

The Sonoma County Coroners Office identified the worker as Hugo Tapia, 21, from Windsor.

According to Peter Melton, a spokesperson from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, workers were transporting seven 100-pound sheets of glass for disposal when they fell on one of the men.

Tapia graduated from Windsor High School in 2010 and attended SRJC.

Angie Chew and SRJC student Chelsea McCrady were friends with Tapia since meeting in kindergarten at San Miguel Elementary. They described Tapia as a sincere person who loved his family and friends.

“He cared for people with his entire heart; there was no faking with anything. He meant what he did and he would do anything for anyone he cared about. The love he had for his friends and family, I’ve never seen anything like it,” McCrady said.

“He loved his parents and his parents definitely loved him. He was really lucky to have had that bond,” Chew said.

Tapia’s funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Windsor.
