Inside the world of kratom: Regulation, dependence and the debate over a ‘natural’ drug
Kratom, a plant-based substance sold for pain relief, anxiety, and withdrawal has become increasingly controversial in Sonoma County as enforcement actions remove
products from smoke shops and gas stations. Once marketed as a natural alternative to
opioids, kratom now sits in a legal and cultural gray area: legal to possess, but not legal
to sell, manufacture, or market in California without regulatory approval.
This story explores the shifting landscape through firsthand perspectives. Jasmine
Serrano, an employee at a Rohnert Park smoke shop that previously sold kratom,
describes its popularity among customers and the recent confusion surrounding product
seizures and state enforcement. Bobby Monta shares his experience becoming
dependent on concentrated kratom extracts and his struggle to stop using it.
Sonoma County now stands caught between a public health risk, personal autonomy,
and a growing national debate about whether plant medicines should be controlled,
regulated or decriminalized, while community members raise questions about safety
and whether prohibition helps or harms.
