Looking for something fun to add to your Valentine’s Day plans? Or maybe you haven’t found a valentine yet? The SRJC’s libraries might have just what you’re looking for with the return of their “blind date with a book” displays!
Each book’s identity is hidden behind a nostalgic brown paper wrapping covered in hearts, hand placed by the student assistants of the library. Amid hearts, the potential reader is given a small, inconspicuous summary of what lies between the pages.
They detail possible themes, ways the reader might relate to the main character, hints at the plot and more. The Doyle Library’s blind date with a book display calls it “a story worth unwrapping,” enticing readers to pick up their next literary date. Both Santa Rosa’s Doyle Library and Petaluma’s Mahoney Library hold unique displays that reflect the pulse of each community.
The book titles are personal recommendations from the library’s student assistants, staff and faculty aimed to grab the attention of students passing by that otherwise might not ask, are too busy, or don’t have the time to read recreationally. Caught up by their curiosity, they can pick up a fun pastime.
It’s beneficial to give your brain a break from academics for a while each day. It also provides an opportunity to enhance your creative thinking. The hidden identity of the book is meant to encourage students to branch out into an unexpected genre as they find themselves submerged in a new world they may not have entered when given the choice.
The library’s “blind date with a book” is an opportunity for students to pick up a new novel. This display serves as a reminder of SRJC’s library staff and their investment in SRJC students.
Of the books checked out since the displays went up Jan. 10, only a few have been returned, hinting at some successful matches. Books remain available until the end of February.
