The Santa Rosa Junior College theatre department is featuring a whirlwind of chaos with its rendition of “Ride the Cyclone” from Nov. 14 to 23 at the Burbank Auditorium.
“Ride the Cyclone” is a musical comedy, created by Jacob Richmond and Brooke Maxwell, which follows six teens in a Canadian chamber choir after they died in a horrific roller coaster accident. The play focuses on them waking up in limbo and meeting a mechanical fortune teller, who offers them a chance of resurrection at the price of a momentous story.
“I didn’t know much about the show at first, but I quickly fell in love with it,” said Aliya Webb, who plays the fortune teller Karnak. “It will make you laugh, cry and feel everything in between.”
SRJC theatre arts instructor Sarah Wintermeyer is directing the play. She has received various award nominations for her roles in such plays as “Much Ado About Nothing” and “O Beautiful.”
SRJC vocal instructor Nate Riebli will manage music production and help Wintermeyer with the theatre production while Jolene Johnson, SRJC dance instructor, will be in charge of choreography.
The play’s music takes inspiration from such artists as David Bowie and Tom Waits. Jazz, pop and rap are a few of the major musical genres featured in the show.
“Ride the Cyclone” features adult themes, such as death, suicide, drugs, sex and crude language.
Prices range from $15-25. “Ride the Cyclone” will have evening performances on Nov. 14-15 and 19-22 at 7:30 p.m. and matinee performances at 2:00 p.m. on Nov. 16 and 23.
