Santa Rosa Junior College will host its fourth annual Green Living Fair, a free event teaching sustainable choices and offering services to reduce waste, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 9 in Bertolini Quad.
SRJC clubs, local groups and organizations will host demonstrations and provide services focused on reusing, recycling, composting and gardening to promote sustainability. Attendees can also bring items that need repair — such as clothing, electronics, bicycles and appliances — in order to reduce waste.
SRJC fashion students will operate a mending bar where they will sew or alter clothing brought in and add patches or decorative stitching to it, as well as provide basic mending supplies for attendees to take home.
Fashion Studies Program Coordinator, Emily Melville said that the Mending bar helps bring life into garments that have had previous rips and stains, and inspires people to have a deeper relationship with their clothing and accessories.
SRJC’s Fashion Club will host a clothing swap, where community members can bring up to three clean, wearable and unwrinkled clothing or accessory items, and pick out any new items they see. No contributions are required to participate.
According to SRJC’s strategic plan, the school aims to “Promote a community culture of sustainability.” That is achieved by promoting a culture of environmental wellness, and economic and social equity.
“Building community is how we are going to build sustainability in this world,” Melville said.
