At Santa Rosa Junior College, students have the unique opportunity at The Oak Leaf to report on disaster when it strikes in Sonoma; keeping their communities informed while building skills and knowledge to understand the many facets of disaster reporting.

In this episode, podcast editor Kevin Terlizzi-Bowes sits down with multiple The Oak Leaf staff members to give a retrospective of their experiences in covering disaster, and what motivates them to face extreme circumstances head-on.

Kevin Terlizzi-Bowes
Kevin Terlizzi-Bowes is a reporter and head podcast editor for The Oak Leaf in his third semester at the SRJC. He also works at the Community Voice in Rohnert Park to round out his skills and gain experience in the field. He has a wide set of  interests ranging from videogames, fashion, crafts and politics, which fuels his passion to cover anything and everything. Kevin strives to learn more about the world by covering events while tentatively developing a voice acting career by hosting podcasts.
Nick Vides
Nick Vides, Ad Manager
Nicholas “Nick” Vides (he/him) Is a seasoned breaking news reporter dedicated to making sure every shutter click of his camera captures a moment worth sharing. Nick’s itch for chasing fires has kept him busy over the past several years, covering every major fire event in Northern California from the Paradise Fire to the Pickett Fire. Nick currently splits his time as a contract photographer with The Press Democrat and works for Highway 12 Winery in Sonoma, California as a cellar hand. For the fall 2025 semester, Nick has stepped into the roll of Ad Manager for The Oak Leaf. He has more than a decade of experience with photography, has been director of photography for multiple short films with the SRJC Media Arts Center, directed numerous student-led broadcasts with his Media 19 class, and interned for The Sarah and Vinnie Show on Alice 97.3.
