The La Carpa Talent Show, showcasing a diverse range of performances from students and hosted by the Latinx Faculty and Staff Association, will be held at 6 p.m., Sept. 25 at the SRJC Burbank Auditorium.
For the fourth straight year, participants in La Carpa will feature a variety of talents, including but not limited to, dancing, singing, comedy and magic.
La Carpa, which means, “the tent,” in English, carries on a Mexican tradition sharing the same name dating back to the early 1900s, where performers gathered to showcase their talents.
“We saw that many students have different talents like singing, dancing and playing various instruments and don’t really get a chance to show that talent unless they are specifically enrolled in visual and performing arts courses and programs,” said Beatriz Camargo, the event organizer.
Similar to a variety show, Carpas were family-friendly traveling circuses held in large canvas tents that appeared throughout Mexico and the American Southwest from the 1920s to the 1930s.
The event will host 18 performers this year, according to Camargo.
Part of the Herencia program, La Carpa promotes Indigenous and Latin American culture and history at SRJC.
“This event supports SRJC’s Campus Climate & Culture Strategic Initiative by centering around the celebration of culture, inclusion and diversity,” Camargo said. “It is open to all members of the community with the invitation to emphasize the celebration of culture and diversity.”
