Women’s basketball team has high hopes for upcoming season

Santa Rosa Junior College women’s basketball team hopes to reach their goal of winning another Big 8 title. This year’s team appears to have the experienced sophomores and the talented freshman needed make another run at a state title.

Team captain and point guard Mia Greco holds an important position. Sophomore, Krysten Copeland is the teams post. “Mia is a great leader and point guard on the floor, she leads by example and has done a great job setting the tone for this year,” said Coach Campbell.

According to Campbell, one of the talented freshman is Analy graduate Jen Tsrumoto. “Well the best thing about playing a team sport is, you walk into practice and games, not just as a single player, but as a family,” Tsrumoto said.

Many members of last year’s team transferred to four-year colleges. Jeannette DeWitt continued on to Humboldt State. Charlene Popoff went to Cal Poly Pomona, and Aly Hennington went to Sonoma State University.

The team’s goals and expectations are the same every year: to be able to compete for the Big 8 title, which they won last year. If the team wins again this year they will be in position to win the state title.

Their main competition is the Big 8 conference. “This is the biggest challenge in the league, San Joaquin Delta and Sierra College are usually tough but we can’t take anyone for granted,” Campbell said.

These are a couple of the individual players goals. Mia Greco said, ” Coming off of last year, I think the returners know what it takes to be competitive. If we come together we will have a great chance of competing as champs of the Big 8.” A quote from another incoming freshman, Ashley Morgan,” No matter if we win or lose we will play hard and be a team throughout the season. We need to mesh and have each other’s backs, we are all excited for the season to start.”
