Multiple delayed events point to overwhelmed Associated Students

The Associated Students’ Calendar of Events for the Fall 2010 semester has been inaccurate since September. Most recently, Music as a Means was moved from Nov. 4 to the last week of February. Jessica Jones, the vice president of the Santa Rosa campus, said Associated Students had planned events too close together.

The Associated Students’ Harvest Festival was the first event to be pushed back, which would have followed closely after the Associated Students Welcome BBQ on Sept. 22. The Harvest Festival took place on October 26 instead. Jones partnered with SRJC’s Vice President of Advocacy Kory Kevin Ryan and brought debates on Propositions 19 and 23 to the festival.

ICC Club Day was moved back because the clubs hadn’t looked at the calendar and weren’t ready for it, Jones said. Some of the bigger corporations Jones tried to get on campus were wary of parking fees and worried about the amount of student traffic, she said. Local vendors were much more excited to be on campus. For future events Jones plans to switch out big vendors with smaller local businesses.

“It’s been very interesting planning events,” Jones said. She said she realized she needs more time between events. Next semester she plans to put on fewer events, and make them bigger.

On Dec. 1 Associated Students will approve the Spring 2011 Semester events calendar. In addition to fewer but larger events, Jones wants to work with faculty to get students to interact with events and build community within the student body. She suggested having students do class projects for an event.
