Holzworths Consider Plea Deal, Court Appearance Delayed

Former Santa Rosa Junior College District Police Sergeant Jeffrey Holzworth and wife Karen are considering a plea deal that would send him to state prison for five years and eight months and her to county jail for one year with one year of probation. After appearing in court March 13, the Holzworths have until April 3 to decide whether to take it or let the trial process run its course.

Karen Holzworth’s defense attorney, George Bousseau, said in court that a package plea deal (a deal that includes both Jeff and Karen) might not work out.

Defense Attorney Joe Passalacqua requested a continuance to discuss discrepancies in dollar amounts Holzworth allegedly stole. Passalacqua’s figures differ from Assistant District Attorney Ami Ariyoshi’s. The judge gave him until April 3.

“The offer is the offer and he’ll have to decide whether to take it,” Ariyoshi said. The Holzworths will reappear in Department 9 at 8:30 a.m. April 3.

Jeff Holzworth was arrested Nov 28 for suspicion of embezzling funds from SRJC parking permit machines. A search warrant affidavit described several instances of suspicious behavior from Holzworth. SRJC District Police Chief Matthew McCaffrey ordered a GPS to track Holzworth’s movements, and after a three week investigation, several thousand dollars were found in his house. Holzworth is charged with 11 counts of receiving stolen property over $400 and one count of embezzlement with a special enhancement for embezzlement exceeding $150,000. Karen is charged with one count of accessory to the crime and three counts of receiving stolen property over $400.
