Chemistry Back on the Softball Field

The difference between the rebuilding of the SRJC softball program and the Bear Cubs who took to the diamond last season is simple: chemistry.

First year coach Philip Wright has played a big role in transforming last spring’s dysfunctional band of SRJC athletes to the determined and close knit Bear Cubs of 2012.

“They had all the talent last year but none of the team spirit,” said Coach Wright. “When I came in my main goals were to get them closer and to implement the five points of success (team chemistry, team discipline, fundamentals, competitiveness, and pride) into the program.”

The product of the team’s and Wright’s efforts is apparent on the field. The team is 5-4, starting the early portion of the season off with a positive record. A fairly young pitching staff is supported by superb hitting,by Kayla Lowe, Sam Bartee and captain Keeley Ray.

Working hard to move up the division ladder, the team has set its sights on securing a berth in the regional tournament.

“There is some tough competition in our division particularly Sierra,” said Wright. “But with the team’s work ethic they have a definite shot at regionals and a great season.”
